Para los panameños, las ruinas de Panamá Viejo y, en especial, la torre de su catedral, son uno de los principales símbolos nacionales. El sitio es también uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos de la ciudad de Panamá, así como área de paseo y recreación para sus habitantes y lugar de visita para la población escolar.
Es, asimismo, escenario de uno de los más grandes esfuerzos de investigación, conservación y puesta en valor que se hayan llevado a cabo en un conjunto histórico monumental del país.
Sus 28 hectáreas forman parte de la primera ciudad fundada por europeos a orillas del océano Pacífico, la más antigua de todas las capitales de tierra firme en el continente americano.
El papel de Panamá como uno de los más importantes centros de expediciones en la historia de la conquista y colonización españolas, así como su función estratégica en el mapa de las rutas comerciales de la época, marcaron desde entonces el destino del istmo como territorio al servicio del tránsito internacional.
Como consecuencia del ataque del pirata Henry Morgan en 1671, la ciudad quedó en ruinas. Dos años después se trasladó a lo que se conoce actualmente como el Casco Antiguo, quedando abandonado el sitio de la vieja Panamá durante más de dos siglos. Esto hizo posible que se conservaran aquí valiosos restos materiales del pasado colonial y de la época prehispánica, que nos permiten hoy estudiar los orígenes de la capital panameña.
El Sitio Arqueológico de Panamá Viejo, inscrito en la Lista de Patrimonio Mundial desde el año 2003, es administrado por el Patronato Panamá Viejo, asociación sin fines de lucro y de régimen mixto integrado por el Club Kiwanis de Panamá, Ministerio de Cultura, Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá, Banistmo y Fundación RILEMO.

For Panamanians, the ruins of Panama Viejo and, especially, the tower of its cathedral, are one of the main national symbols. The site is also one of the biggest tourist attractions in Panama City, as well as a promenade and recreation area for its inhabitants and a place of visit for the school population.
It is also the scene of one of the greatest research, conservation and enhancement efforts that have been carried out in a monumental historical complex in the country.
Its 28 hectares are part of the first city founded by Europeans on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, the oldest of all the mainland capitals in the Americas.
The role of Panama as one of the most important expedition centers in the history of the Spanish conquest and colonization, as well as its strategic function in the map of the commercial routes of the time, marked since then the destiny of the isthmus as a territory at the service of international transit.
