Westmoreland, Virginia, British America, February 22, 1732-Mount Vernon, Virginia, United States, December 14, 1799) was the first President of the United States between 1789 and 1797 and commander in chief of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary war of Independence of the United States (1775-1783). In the United States it is considered the Father of the Nation. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States along with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
Washington started winning medals arming troops of the colony of Virginia to support the British Empire during the French and Indian War (1754-1763), a conflict that he inadvertently helped start.
The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander of the Continental Army in 1775. The following year, the British were evicted from Boston, lost New York City and were defeated in Trenton, New Jersey, to the surprise caused Washington crossing the Delaware river. Because of his strategy, Revolutionary forces captured the two main British combat armies at the Battle of Saratoga and Yorktown in. In negotiations with Congress, the colonial states, and French allies, remained a weak army and a fragile nation amid the threats of disintegration and failure. After leading the American victory in the War of Independence, he resigned his military posts and returned to life in his Mount Vernon plantation, an act that brought him even more popularity.

He tried to create a nation capable of sustaining peace with its neighbors. His Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793 provided a basis for avoiding any involvement in foreign conflicts. He supported plans to build a strong central government by paying the national debt, implementing an effective tax system and the creation of a national bank. Washington avoided the war and maintained a decade of peace with Britain with the signing of the Jay Treaty in 1795, despite intense opposition from the Democratic-Republican Party. Although never officially joined the Federalist Party, he supported its program. His two periods of government established many policies and traditions that exist until today.
Before the end of his term he again retired to civilian life, setting an important precedent for peaceful transition that has set an example not only in the US but also in other republics future. The Washington Farewell Address was an introduction to the republican virtue and a stern warning against partisanship, sectionalism and involvement in foreign wars. He was awarded the first Congressional Gold Medal with the thanks of the House in 1776.
Washington died in 1799 mainly due to treatment for pneumonia, including calomel and bloodletting, resulting in a combination of hypovolemic shock due to loss of five pints of blood and suffocation and dehydration. Henry Lee III was who delivered the eulogy, where he said Washington was "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen".
