A origem do Rudge Ramos remonta à parcela das terras dos monges beneditinos (séc. XVIII) que se situava na área do atual bairro. Juntamente com a propriedade dos monges ainda existiam na região alguns sítios, como o pertencente à família Camargo. O local, na época conhecido como Bairro dos Meninos, era cortado pelo antigo Caminho do Mar, por onde passavam os tropeiros que transitavam entre o planalto paulista e o Porto de Santos, carregando os produtos destinados à exportação e os que eram importados para o consumo na capital e nas vilas do interior. Na área do bairro chegou a existir um rancho para o descanso dos viajantes, construído em 1831. Também viviam na região muitos carreiros, que transportavam, por meio de carros de boi, lenha e mantimentos da região para o núcleo central da capital. Por volta de 1870, a velha fazenda dos monges foi desapropriada pelo Império para dar lugar às linhas coloniais onde se situariam os imigrantes que chegavam. Englobavam áreas do bairro as linhas de São Bernardo Velho e Rio dos Meninos. Nelas compraram lotes várias famílias de ascendência italiana, que ali desenvolveram atividades vinculadas à lavoura. Uma dessas famílias - a dos irmãos Piagentini - ergueria, a partir de 1891, o antigo edifício da Igreja São João Baptista, demolida em 1962 para dar lugar à atual construção.
Os primeiros loteamentos com características urbanas se iniciaram na década de 1920, impulsionados pela reforma do Caminho do Mar, obra executada sob o comando de Arthur Rudge Ramos, que posteriormente daria nome ao bairro. Dessa época são os loteamentos das vilas Mussolini e Caminho do Mar. Ainda por volta de 1930, Agenor Camargo Filho, remanescente da antiga família, loteou suas terras, originando a Vila Camargo, da qual considerável parte foi ainda reloteada nas décadas subsequentes, surgindo dela as vilas Vivaldi e Antonieta. O processo de industrialização ocorrido na cidade a partir dos anos 50 do século XX impulsionou estes e ainda outros loteamentos, como os das vilas Império, América e Helena e o do Parque Santo Antonio, fazendo com que o Rudge Ramos adquirisse as feições atuais. No bairro se fixaram indústrias importantes, como a Termomecânica e a Martini Rossi, aproveitando sua estratégica localização às margens da Via Anchieta e a proximidade da capital paulista.

The place, at the time known as Bairro dos Meninos, was cut by the old Caminho do Mar, where the drovers who passed between the São Paulo plateau and the Port of Santos passed, carrying products for export and those that were imported for consumption. in the capital and in the countryside villages. In the neighborhood area, there was a ranch for travelers to rest, built in 1831. There were also many paths in the region, which transported cattle, firewood and food from the region to the central core of the capital. Around 1870, the old monks' farm was expropriated by the Empire to make way for the colonial lines where the arriving immigrants would be located. The São Bernardo Velho and Rio dos Meninos lines encompassed areas of the neighborhood. In them several families of Italian descent bought lots, which developed activities related to farming there. One of these families - that of the Piagentini brothers - would erect, from 1891, the old building of the São João Baptista Church, demolished in 1962 to give place to the current construction.
The first subdivisions with urban characteristics began in the 1920s, driven by the renovation of Caminho do Mar, a project carried out under the command of Arthur Rudge Ramos, who would later name the neighborhood. From that time are the subdivisions of the villages Mussolini and Caminho do Mar. Still around 1930, Agenor Camargo Filho, remnant of the old family, divided their land, originating Vila Camargo, of which a considerable part was still relocated in the subsequent decades, arising from it. the Vivaldi and Antonieta villages.
